project.description

(i) project objectives and goals :
	main objective of project is educating 
	younger generation of art-theorist and
	art-practitionars with problematics of 
	new-media art 
	(production, presentation, promotion...),
	with it's history and "main" approaches 
	in media.art
   
(ii) description of project :
	project is planed in the form of workshop
	(within one week max.) that whould 
	try to be educational for all participants. 
	each of the lecturers would have a 
	session with specific topic that would be
	presented to participants.
	after each session lecturer would try to
	start a discussion which would help in
	articulating opinions of participants.
	other part of workshop would consist of
	presentations and screenings of media 
	related art and would serve as illustration
	to some of the discussed topics, 
	or would generate a separate discussion.
	  	 
(iii) background, context and reasons for project :
 	croatian media.art.production has had 
	a very intensive and fruitfull production 
	during the sixties and seventies, especially
	within experimental film and art-video. 
	however this "ancient history" never 
	appeared to be a part of the 
	mainstream culture of later period 
	and therefore was never officialy 
	introduced in formal educational system.
	this kept the subject within grasp of few
	interested and enthusiastical individuals 
	who had the lack to have acces to 
	the information.
	current state of media.art 
	in general reflects this in very low level 
	of media.art.theory and criticts. 
	only small procentage of all
	art.theorist have a vague idea of 
	media.art past and therefore also a 
	distorded picture of present 
	the global production.	
	while participating in main technological   		 
 	advancements of this era 
	(personal computer technology, internet,
	digital video...) this mediums are not 
	questioned and used in experimental and 
	"new", but just consumed in non interesting
	and non inovative approach.  
 
(iv) expected results of project :
	short term results would be 
	involvment of participants	
	in similar projects and assembeling 
	a network for distributing and promoting 
	media critique, media.art and media theory.	
	
(v) follow-up and/or long-term benefits of project :
	long term results would be heaving more 
	educated artists/theorists/audience
	in problems of media and media 
	related practices that could potentialy
	lead to change/inprovment in education
	system/society and perception 
	of wider audience.  

(vi) Public influence or impact of project?
	this project would be initaly 
	interesting for somewhat limited circle
	of people/specialist in this field, 
	but their involvment in civil cociety 
	and their work/practice would
	be important for society in general. 
	the best way of inplementing 
	media awearness in young 
	generations would be 
	practicing and discussing  it.   

(vii) discussion topics and agenda?
	we are currently in the process
	of defining discussion topics
	with invited lectureres and we
	are sure about the program for 
	following topics: 
	eastern-european video-art
	(by keiko sei), 
	origins of interactive art 
	(by malcolm le grice) and
	net.art from russia
	(by olia lialina) ...	  

 information about participation in this project :  

	(i) who is the target audience of the project?
	as the project is mainly focused 
	on new technology and media our 
	interest groups are final year/post graduate
	students and young curators/media art critics.

	(ii) what are appropriate specializations 
	or disciplines for the project?
	video-art, experimental film and net.art are
	primary discilpines within art that
	project will mainly adress. 
	media theory and activism 
	will also be discussed.

	(iii) at what level will the project
	 be conducted? 
	project is international with focus
	on europe and eastern europe.
	 
	(iv) what are criteria for 
	participant selection?
	personal interest in media.art,
	working knowledge of english,
	active use of e-mail and 
	previous involvment/experience 
	with media.art ...

	(v) what will be expected 
	of participants?
	to take an active role in discussions
	attend all screening and presentations
	and take part in mailling list discussion
	and organization of similar events.  

	(vi) how will participants be able
	to participate actively in the project?
	proposing topics for discussions and
	participating in them would be the very 
	helpfull.

Keiko Sei is a writer and a curator on/of media art.
After working as a video curator in Japan since the early 1980s,
running an organization for videoart and independent video,
she has moved to Eastern Europe in 1988 to investigate about independent
use of media in the communist East. Currently based in Czech Republic,
her articles have been published worldwide.

__|Malcolm Le Grice|_____________________________________________________

Malcom Le Grice is one of the pioneers of digital art. His works 
include a wide range of media, from experimental film and art video up to
computer music and installations. Since the seventies up to day he has 
been also active in theory of new media art, publishing books, essays,
writing critics and in the same time being a teaching or visiting 
professor in several art schools, colleges and universities.

Is net.artist, critic and curator, born Moscow 1971. She is also a 
Professor of Networks and Online Environments (Merz Academie, Stuttgart).
was a director of CINE FANTOM film club(1996-1998),
co-organizer of CINE FANTOM festival, author of lectures 
HISTORY OF PARALLEL FILM, Contributing editor of 
4 RUSSIAN VIDEO ART AND ALTERNATIVE VIDEO compilations.
Her recent work is curating net art gallery
